Akamai Technologies recently released its ‘State of the Internet Report’ for Q1 2012.

The report includes data gathered from Akamai’s globally distributed platform and contains insights on attack traffic, broadband penetration and mobile connectivity.

It’s quite an extensive report and contains some interesting information on the internet as it is today. Here are some of the key highlights of the report:

Internet & Broadband Penetration:

  • The global average connection speed was 2.6 Mbps and the global average peak connection speed was recorded at 13.5 Mbps
  • The global average connection speed experienced a 14% quarter-over-quarter increase in Q1 2012
  • South Korea has the highest average connection speed of 15.7 Mbps and the highest level of broadband adoption at 86%
  • Libya continues to be the country with the lowest average connection speed i.e. 0.5 Mbps
  • Average Connection Speeds of Japan, Latvia, Switzerland, Ireland, and Finland grew by more than 30% over Q1 2011
  • Sixty countries around the world had broadband adoption levels greater than 10%, while China and India had the lowest levels of broadband adoption among countries on the list, at 3.0% and 1.2% respectively.

Internet Security:

  • In Q1 2012, attack traffic originated from 182 unique countries
  • China was the top source of attack traffic with about 26% of attacks originating there
  • 42% originated in the Asia Pacific/Oceania region, 35% in Europe, 21% in North and South America, and just under 1.5% came from Africa.

Mobile Connectivity:

  • Mobile data traffic almost doubled from the first quarter of 2011 to the first quarter of 2012
  • Global mobile penetration reached 87% in Q1 2012 and mobile subscriptions now total around 6.2 billion. However, the actual number of subscribers is around 4.2 billion, since many have several subscriptions.
