Becoming a reseller is a good business decision looking at the rapid growth of web services. Reselling web hosting products is one of the most lucrative businesses on the internet today, and many brands want to be present online. Reselling hosting and web services is as easy as difficult it could be. You can start off by selecting the best reseller hosting plan there is, buy it, log into your reseller account, and start your own business. Looks easy on the outside, but there are a lot of things you need to be aware of before you begin.
Now that you are into the reseller hosting business, there are certain things that you will need to do to get your hosting business going. It includes getting a setup for your hosting, migrating customers if necessary, creating a marketing plan, etc. One such important aspect is connecting your domain name to a reseller server.
By connecting the domain name to the reseller server you are essentially pointing the correct address to the destination where your files are stored. This helps in resolving the DNS quickly. If you have purchased or are going to purchase a reseller hosting plan soon, this article is just for you. So, without any delay, let us understand how to connect the domain name to a reseller server.
With your domain name linked to your hosting provider account, it’s easy to start your own website. There are three options:
- You have a ResellerClub hosting account.
- Your website is hosted by another provider and you have name servers for your domain.
- You have received a number of host records to associate your domain with the host.
So, let’s examine each step so we can connect a domain with a hosting account.
1. You have a reseller hosting plan with ResellerClub
In order to link to your new domain, you will need to point your domain to the DNS name server. You can use a private name server or a reseller name server for your welcome email. You can easily do this through your web email account as follows:
- Sign in to your web account (the customer registration options are in the top right corner of the home screen).
- Select the domain list in the left sidebar and click the Manage button next to Domains in the list.
- Navigate to the name servers and select your DNS provider from the list. Then use the checkboxes to save the changes.
- After the name server has been updated, it takes about 24 hours for DNS changes to be accepted globally. In rare cases, however, it can take up to 48 hours.
2. Your website is hosted by another provider and you are provided with name servers for your domain
To connect your domain to a third-party hosting program through your nameserver, you must set it as Custom for your domain. This can be done as follows:
- Log in to your account, click the List of Domains tab, select My List of Domains, and click the Manage List of Domains button.
- Then go to the Name Server section and select your DNS from the custom list.
- Then enter the hostname server in each line (click the Add Name Server button if you want to configure multiple name servers).
- Then click the Save Changes button. If the global server is updated and the resolution is correct, it will take approximately 24-48 hours for the domain to be distributed.
You may get a nameserver with an IP address provided by some hosting providers. That’s enough to start with, so enter the server name.
3. You have received a number of host records to connect your domain with the hosting
If you have your own host server and know the IP address, you can set an A record for your domain to connect to the server. If you purchased your account from another hosting provider, you may be given an IP address that your domain can use to connect to your hosting account. In this case, you will also need to create an A record.
This can only be done if the domain uses a DNA name server. Registers can be set as follows:
- Log in to your account, select My Domain from the menu, and click the Manage Domains button in the list.
- Then go to the Advanced DNS tab at the top of the page.
- Search the Host Records section and click the Add New Record button (if this option isn’t available, it indicates that your domain isn’t using DNA).
- Select the type record and enter the host that points to the server’s IP address.
Just for your information:
@: Is used to name the host to indicate the root domain (abc.tld)
www: Is used to configure subdomain registration www.abc.tld
Custom Hostname: You can use this to set up a subdomain and reference the host server (for example, the host blog references blog.abc.tld to the host).
*-To configure a wildcard subdomain, you must enter it as a host (this means pointing all non-existent subdomains to the host).
- Then enter the IP address of the host server in the Value field.
- You can leave the TTL automatic (30 minutes) or select a custom value from the menu.
TTL is the amount of time the host record data remains after the record is updated or deleted. If you don’t know which TTL to use, leave it automatic.
- After entering all the details, save with the Save Changes icon.
Custom records typically take about 30 minutes to take effect. If requested by your host provider, you will need to create additional records (such as URLs and CNAME redirects). These registers can be set in the same way as the A register. Simply select the corresponding type of record in the menu and enter the value you received from your host provider.
After adding the records, you should check if there are any records for the same hostname and remove them since they will conflict with your records. Please check the nature of these records, whether they are Permanent or Masked or Unmasked Redirects, A Records, CNAME, etc.
The records for the parking page are set as default by a newly registered domain. These are nothing but URL redirects for @ hosting point to http://www.abc.tld/ . This record will be removed if you press the trash button.
With this, you are all set.
